Mark your calendars and plan to attend this presentation on Thursday, December 3 at 8:00 a.m. in the Auditorium at Colorado Mountain College – West Garfield Campus where Ms. Denise McCourt will present a Comprehensive Strategy on Energy Independence. This strategy is to achieve America’s energy security through a balanced national energy policy that will create substantial long-term solutions. The plan will outline how the United States can secure sufficient quantities of reliable, affordable energy, while safeguarding the environment, to meet the energy needs of American consumers and to create new high-paying jobs and generate trillions of dollars for federal, state and local governments. Ms. McCourt will focus on presenting solutions that include a concentration on energy efficiency, diversity of supply and technology. This event is offered free of charge and is sponsored by Colorado Mountain College - West Garfield Campus and the Rifle, Grand Junction, Silt and Meeker Chambers of Commerce. This event is open to all regional Chamber Members, seating is available on a first come, first serve basis.

The First Annual Silt Area Chamber of Commerce Tamarisk Removal was a great success. Tamarisks have grown exponentially along the Colorado River since their inception. A single Tamarisk has the ability to drink over 300 gallons of water per day! While eradication results vary, the cutting and spraying method seems to be effective. This involves cutting the bush close to the stump followed by an injection of a chemical solution (eco-friendly of course).

Silt Chamber members along with 10 local volunteers confronted the Tamarisks on Oct 24th with admirable effort. Starting in the Silt River Park, we filled an entire industrial dumpster before moving on to Stoney Ridge and Tara Park. In addition to ridding these areas of the dreaded Tamarisk, we were also able to donate the wood to a local artist who makes furniture and other products out of Tamarisk. Our removal project has attracted the attention of other parties who have expressed interest in participating in further removal efforts. This is a great initiative that everyone can get behind and we look forward to organizing another project in the future. Thanks to all for their participation and support.

This years Silt Hey Days Grand Marshall is The Grand Lady herself Marvelle Couey, a life long resident of Garfield County. Born in Glenwood Springs and raised on Garfield Creek, Marvelle was raised in the ranching communities of Garfield and Divide Creeks. Marvelle and first husband Tony Manuepella owned and operated the New Castle Pool Hall or Tony’s Cue Club as many know it. Marvell and Tony had two sons, Mickey and Richard, that is Mickey on the hay wagon. Marvelle met the love of her life Wilbur Couey at the sale barn, one look and she had found her man and they married.. They ranched on Mamm Creek, operating a cow/calf operation, as well as Wilbur serving as the state brand inspector . They raised the three children riding behind their mom, Jacque, Kelly and Joanne. The children large and small on the hay wagon are all of Marvell’s family. When Marvelle lost her love she continued to ranch and raise her family. Marvelle has received accolades as a Woman Rancher from Women in Business and continues to operate and be the driving force of the family ranch on Mamm Creek. Marvell is a true pioneer of our area living her whole life between Garfield and Mamm Creeks . Marvelle had a birthday yesterday (July 31) so drop by the Grand Marshals tent and enjoy some talk of the good old days and have a piece of birthday cake with this Grand Lady.
